Q: Okay, what in the heck is a drive by breeding?
A: With a drive by breeding, you bring your girl over, breed her, and take her home that same day.

Q: What are the advantages?
A: One is the cost, $750 on contract, $750 when you register the cria. That's a 50% savings. Additionally, you get to keep your dam at home, along with her cria, so you can enjoy the most fun part of your alpaca's life. In addition, your alpaca will only come in contact with one alpaca that isn't part of your herd.

Q: What are the disadvantages?
A: You need to do a bit of work. You need to bring her here, and have to put up with me for a couple of hours. You'd need to have an ultrasound or progesterone test done at 3-4 weeks post mating. The other disadvantage is that if the pregnancy doesn't take, you've lost a couple of weeks. Having a teaser male will allow you to test her sooner.

Q: What if the breeding doesn't take?
A: I'd recommend trying this method no more than 3 times. If it doesn't work, all money paid will be applied to a standard breeding contract. I'll be happy to provide guidance and work with you in special circumstances.

Q: Can I choose any male?
A: Sort of. I don't want to waste your time or mine. If I don't yet have a good history of a male getting the job done the first time, I'll pass. As of this writing on September 29, 2006, all herdsires here qualify.

Q: Can I choose any female?
A: Breeding a maiden in this fashion may not be the best idea. Maidens can be tricky to get pregnant, or even to sit.

Q: What about live birth guarantees etc?
A: Same as any other breeding, 30 days.

Q: Does it really work?
A: It's quite common in the east, and for some unknown reason, hasn't caught on here. While it is not considered to be a good idea to move a dam for 45-60 days post breeding, due to the delay in implantation, moving a female within 48 hours of breeding does not seem to affect conception rates.

Q: How do we arrange one?
A: For questions, email, call or make an appointment to come by the farm. We'll talk about your dam, your situation, your needs and goals. If it works, we'll do it.
